This year marks a significant milestone – the 100th anniversary of the discovery of dinosaur fossil footprints on Brijuni, one of Croatia’s most important palaeontological sites.
To celebrate, Brijuni National Park and its partners are hosting a series of educational and scientific events aimed at raising awareness about the value of geological heritage and the need to protect natural sites.
The History and Importance of the Discovery
The dinosaur footprints on Brijuni were uncovered a century ago and have since become an invaluable part of our scientific and cultural heritage.
Across eight locations within Brijuni National Park, researchers have found footprints belonging to various dinosaur species.
These traces offer a glimpse into the lives of these ancient creatures, who roamed the area over 100 million years ago when Brijuni was part of the shallow waters of the Tethys Ocean.
These fossilised footprints help scientists estimate the size and behaviour of dinosaurs while shedding light on the region’s geological past.

Preserving them is vital not only for research but also for educating visitors, giving them a deeper understanding of our palaeontological legacy.
Anniversary Celebration Programme
Working with the local community, a packed programme has been planned, featuring talks, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive activities for all ages:
Talks and Workshops for Youngsters – Educational workshops and talks about dinosaurs and geological heritage have been held at Sunce Nursery and Fažana Primary School. The aim was to introduce children to the world of dinosaurs and highlight the importance of protecting natural treasures.
Children’s Art Exhibition – Artwork inspired by dinosaurs will be displayed on 5 April 2025 at the Fažana Tourist Agency and the Brijuni National Park office. The exhibition carries an eco-friendly message about the lasting impact of human activity, with some pieces crafted from single-use plastics.
Dinosaur Quiz and Talk – On Thursday, 10 April 2025, an educational and fun quiz about dinosaurs, environmental protection, and Brijuni National Park will take place in Pula. Before the quiz, attendees can enjoy engaging talks by experts.
Dinosaur Day on Veliki Brijun – The main event is set for 12 April 2025, from 10:00 to 18:00. Visitors can join expert-led tours, educational workshops, interactive storytelling, and explorations of palaeontological sites.
Highlights include a special workshop by the Croatian Geological Society, “Discover Earth – Peek Through a Microscope,” and guided visits to key fossil locations. Special transport within the island will be provided to the palaeontological sites, though pre-registration for guided tours is required at the info point upon arrival.

Tickets and Visit Planning
Tickets for Dinosaur Day are limited and will go on sale on 11 April 2025 at 12:00 exclusively through the Brijuni National Park web shop. Visitors are advised to plan their arrival and departure in advance due to limited boat transport capacity.
Preserving Geological Heritage – A Shared Responsibility
The dinosaur footprints on Brijuni are a precious legacy that demands careful protection. Natural processes like erosion, along with human impact, can threaten their survival.
Taking steps to safeguard them and educating the public about their importance is essential for future generations.
