The tradition of couples from the eastern Croatian cities of Vukovar and Osijek celebrating 50 plus years of marriage on Valentine’s Day has continued.
For the 12th year, 42 couples from Vukovar celebrated their long-term love by socialising together with music and dance.
“It is a pleasure to be able to brighten up the everyday life of our fellow citizens in retirement in this way every year, and this year we happily returned to the traditional celebration and organised a festive lunch and a special gathering for Vukovar couples with over 50 years of marriage,” said Vukovar mayor Ivan Penava, who wished his fellow citizens many more years together in health and love, pointing out that they are a true example of togetherness.
The traditional Valentine’s Day celebration in Vukovar was special for husband and wife Marija and Vladmir Luks, who had been married the longest amongst those who turned up to celebrate.
Marija and Vladimir were married in 1958 and this year they are celebrating 65 years of marriage, so they had the duty of cutting the cake, and the City of Vukovar presented them with a gift.
Tambura band “Begeš” were in charge of the music as couples enjoyed themselves on the dance floor.
Meanwhile, in Osijek, 79 couples celebrating 50 years of marriage gathered in Osijek on Tuesday, on Valentine’s Day.
It is a traditional ceremony that the City of Osijek has been organising since 1995.
Congratulating them on Valentine’s Day and 50 years of marriage, Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić said that half a century of life together is worthy of admiration and respect, and many couples were happy to share the secret of a successful and long-lasting marriage, highlighting love, understanding, tolerance, patience, forgiveness and happiness as important ingredients.
Many of them happily danced to the eternal hits performed by the Trend Acoustic Band.
