NEW YORK, 4 September 2020 – Croatia’s Petra Martić (29) has moved into the fourth round of the US Open in New York.Â
Martić, who is the tournament’s 8th seed, was too good for Varvara Gracheva from Russia, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 on Friday.Â
This result equals the Croatian’s best performance at Flushing Meadows. Last year she also reached the fourth round.Â
Martić will be hoping to go one better when she plays the winner of the Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Yulia Putintseva third round match next up.
Martić reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 14 in January 2020 and still holds that ranking. She has won one singles title on the WTA Tour—the 2019 Istanbul Cup, and her best performance at a Grand Slam was in 2019 when she reached the quarterfinals of the French Open.Â
Three other Croatians will be in third round action later today and tomorrow. Borna Coric faces 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece, Marin ÄŒilić meets 2nd seed Dominic Thiem and Donna Vekić will play Tsvetana Pironkova.Â
