In the Little Croatia Park (Mala Hrvatska) in Krakow, you can find the world’s only Avenue of Croatian Stars.

This avenue contains stars with the names of famous native Croats, Croats with Polish roots or Poles with Croatian roots who have made an undeniable contribution to building Polish-Croatian relations.

They often supported the activities of Poles in their pursuit of independence and had an influence on the development of various areas of social life in Poland or Croatia, during the periods of its partitions and when it regained independence.

The avenue was created in 2021 on the initiative of the honorary consul of the Republic of Croatia in Krakow Pawel Wlodarczyk.

On the occasion of Croatia’s national holiday “Statehood Day”, which is on May 30, every year at the end of May, on the day of the Croatian Picnic organized by the Consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Krakow, a ceremonial unveiling of several stars with new names takes place, with fanfares played and performances honorary salvos. Currently, the Avenue Croatian Stars has 26 stars.

During the Croatian Picnic organized by the Consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Krakow on May 25 this year, the ceremony of unveiling another 8 stars in the Avenue of Croatian Stars took place. These are:

The star of Antun Augustinčić – a Croatian sculptor who made a monument to Pilsudski, the father of Poland’s independence, in Katowice.

The founder of the star was the Mayor of Katowice.

The star of Andrzej Dudycz – bishop of Croatian Knin. In 1583, he bought the town of Śmigiel in Poland. At that time, the city was an important center of the Polish Reformation and the seat of Arian activists. He was also the initiator of the establishment and endowment of the Arian school in Śmigiel.

The founder of the star was the Mayor of Śmigiel.

The star of Ljudevit Gaj – one of the most important people of the Croatian national revival in the 19th century. The author of the poem “Croatia has not yet perished” – according to the Polish pattern “Poland has not yet perished”, which is today the Polish anthem. He actively cooperated with Poles.

The founder of the Star is the Małopolskie Voivodeship.

The star of Josip Hamm – linguist, one of the first Polish language teachers at the University of Zagreb, permanent lecturer and great popularizer of the Polish language.

The founder of the Star is the Rector of the University of the National Education Commission in Krakow.

The star August Šenoa – an outstanding Croatian poet who creatively collaborated with Poles, whose names often appeared in activities and topics related to literature and poetry, but also related to Poland’s pursuit of regaining independence.

The founder of the Star is the Mayor of Wilamowice.

The star of Vanda Kochansky-Devidé – geologist and paleontologist, the first person elected as a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a person of Polish origin, cooperating with Polish universities.

The founder of the Star is the Chief Geologist of the Country.

Star of Antoni Lipošćak – Croatian soldier, general of the Austro-Hungarian army. He was the last Austrian governor of Poland based in Lublin in 1918, who repelled Russian troops from the area of ​​today’s Lublin region, supporting the regaining of independence of this part of Poland.

The founder of the Star is the Lublin Voivodeship.

The star of Emilij Laszowski Szeliga – a person of Polish origin (which he emphasized, but he felt he was a Croatian), founder of the Zagreb city museum, the Zagreb city library, the Zagreb city archive, director of the Croatian National Archives.

The founder of the Star was the “Brothers of the Croatian Dragon” Society.

The star was unveiled by the Grand Master of the “Brothers of the Croatian Dragon” Society and its chairman, prof. Dr. Mislav Grgić, accompanied by the director of the State Archives in Zagreb, Mrs. Željka Dmitrus Purić.
