Vukovar Water Tower – a symbol of Croatian unity officially opened

After 29 years, the Vukovar water tower – a symbol of Croatian unity – has been restored. The formal opening of the reconstructed water tower took place on Friday evening in the eastern Croatian city.

Due to the epidemiological situation in the country, the opening ceremony took place without the attendance of the general public but was streamed online.

The grand opening ceremony was started by the Croatian national anthem performed by the Klapa of the Croatian Navy, Sv. Juraj. The Croatian flag was raised to the top of the water tower by Krešimir Đalto, the son of the late Vukovar defender Hrvoje Đalta, who together with the late defender Ivica Ivanik raised the flag on the water tower during the aggression on Vukovar, Grad Vukovar writes.

Tomislav Brajša, Tomislav Bralić, Vladimir Košić-Zec, the best Croatian tamburaši, Ivana and Marija Husar, Jacques Houdek and Zaprešić boys all performed during the opening of the water tower.

The reconstruction of the 50-meter-high water tower, which has become a reminder of the tribulations of Vukovar during its siege and fall in 1991, started in May 2017.

The complete reconstruction and conservation of the tower, which now includes a memorial room, cost HRK 46 million, and of that amount HRK 36 million has been raised through donations. During the project, 640 holes on the edifice which were the result of the shelling of the Yugoslav Army and Serb paramilitary forces in 1991, have been preserved.
