Croatia’s Filip Zubcic wins World Cup Giant Slalom in Italy

5 December 2020 – Croatian skier Filip Zubcic (27) has won the giant slalom at the men’s International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup in Santa Caterina in Italy on Saturday.
Zubcic started sixth and finished his first run in a time of 1:05.03, +0.69 behind Slovenia’s Zan Kranjec who was first.
Snow began to fall heavier before the second run which meant slower times. Zubcic finished his second run in 1:10.03 and with an overall time of 2:15.06 he took the lead.
Kranjec completed his second run in 1:10.84 but it was not enough to catch the Croatian and he would be second by just 0.12 seconds. Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt finished third.
“Last season was the best of my life so I was hoping to continue in the same direction. I succeeded again. The course was very difficult, the snow was falling heavily. I have a lot of training in conditions like this so it was normal for me. I have a lot of strength, so when the conditions are bad. My goal is always to be on top,” said Zubcic.
This was the Croatian’s second victory of 2020 after he won the men’s World Cup giant slalom in Japan back in February.
