Croatia’s PM welcomes UK-EU deal

ZAGREB, Dec 24 (Hina) – Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic welcomed on Thursday the reaching of a trade agreement between Great Britain and the European Union, hoping that the “strong partnership” of the two sides will continue.
“We welcome the agreement on future relations between the EU and Great Britain after intensive negotiations a week before the end of the transitional period and we hope that the strong partnership with Great Britain will continue,” Plenkovic tweeted.
He also shared a tweet by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who wrote: “It was worth fighting for this deal. We now have a fair & balanced agreement with the UK. It will protect our EU interests, ensure fair competition & provide predictability for our fishing communities. Europe is now moving on.”
The EU and the UK have reached an agreement on trade relations after Brexit seven days before the UK is to leave one of the most powerful trade blocs, which is its biggest foreign policy turnaround since the end of the empire.
The UK leaves the single market and customs union on 31 December.
“We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny,” Boris Johnson said at Thursday’s press conference, claiming it was a “good deal for the whole of Europe”.
Johnson said it was a comprehensive Canada-style deal between the UK and the EU. A deal that will protect jobs across this country, that will enable UK goods to be sold without tariffs, without quotas in the EU market.
