Posusje gas poisoning tragedy: Croatia sends condolences to families of victims

ZAGREB, 1 January  (Hina) – Croatia President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Friday expressed condolences to the families and friends of eight young men and women who died as a consequence of asphyxiation on New Year’s Eve near Posusje, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

PM Plenkovic sent a message of condolence to the president of West Herzegovina Canton, Zdenko Cosic, Posusje Mayor Ante Begic, the government said in a press release.

“It is with disbelief and great sorrow that I received the tragic news about the loss of eight young lives on New Year’s Eve in Tribistovo near Posusje. In these difficult moments for the families and friends of those lost, I would like to extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the Croatian government and the Croatian people,” the PM said.

“It is with great sadness that I received the tragic news of the tragedy in which eight young lives were lost in Tribistovo near Posusje. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families and friends of the victims,” Milanovic said in a Facebook post.

Four young men and four young women aged between 18 and 20 died as a result of asphyxiation in Tribistovo, not far from Posusje in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Unofficial sources have said that their death was most probably due to asphyxiation caused by a gas-powered generator unit that supplied electricity to the house where they were staying.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can cause sudden illness and death.
