Small family-run Croatian organic olive oil producers TERRA ROSSA are featured in a new US documentary series The Global Farm hosted by athlete-turned-urban farmer Courtney Guerra.
In the series, the L.A. urban farmer and chef explores the agriculture systems of different countries. Guerra’s mission is to inspire change in food culture and educate people on not only the necessity, but the ease of a farm to table diet.
Producers of the series were inspired by the family story and international success of TERRA ROSSA in Istria, which was declared the best extra virgin olive oil region in the world for the sixth year in a row in 2020 by leading guide Flos Olei.
“In spring of 2017, I was surprisingly contacted by the film producer Andrew Fairbank from Hollywood, Los Angeles. He said they were going to shoot a documentary across Europe and US,” Daniel Bellani explains, before adding.
“Courtney and the production team from Nu Boyana Film Studios and B2Y Productions visited our farm near Pican, Istria. The film team consisting of about 15 people was on site with us for a whole day. Everything was very professional and clearly organised. For our family, as well as for our village, the scenery was very unusual. After being a bit stiff at the beginning, we quickly adapted to this very special situation. Different takes had to be repeated, instructions from the director had to be followed. It was a great atmosphere and we were very excited to be able to present our family and product, as well as our culture, tradition and country to a big audience.”
Bellani says they are were very proud to be given the opportunity to tell their story in this way.
“The original idea and driver of “TERRA ROSSA” was togetherness as well as family cohesion across generations. From the very beginning, our focus was on sustainable agriculture. We were convinced that only in harmony with nature can a superior quality product be created. We were once pioneers in organic farming, but now we are proud to see that many other producers have understood sustainable agriculture and are following suit. What a beautiful confirmation.”
The documentary also features a moving interview with the grandparents of the family.
“My grandfather celebrated his 97th birthday a few days ago, my grandmother has unfortunately passed away. I am all the more touched and honoured by this documentary about us as a family. It gives us a lasting memory and beautiful memory of our grandmother,” Daniel says.
TERRA ROSSA Olive Oil is a blend of 5 olive varieties. Leccino, Frantoio, Pendolino, Buza and Bjelica. The olive oil has received several international awards for its exceptional quality. At the International Olive Oil Competition in New York it has won gold 5 times in a row since 2015.
Daniel says that passion for a natural product with 4 generations involved, and the fact that everything at their organic farm is done by hand, from picking to filling and labelling, is part of the secret to the brand’s success.
