The Croatian town of Kaštela, located just northwest of Split on the Dalmatian coast, will soon get an impressive outdoor space complete with a large amphitheatre, park, restaurants and exercise equipment, Kaštel town authorities announced on Wednesday.
The design of the new town square, which will have views back to the medieval Kaštilac fortress, was done by architect Filip Tadin.
“I am happy and proud that this idea has seen the light of day. More than 12.5 thousand square meters will cover the area along the coast called “Novo brce”, and in fact it is a new town square with a large amphitheater for various events and Kaštilca in the background as an ideal backdrop, but on the other hand space in which citizens will be able to stay, socialise, walk and exercise every day. In any case, we are on the way to creating a beautiful everyday life for all generations,” Mayor Denis Ivanović said.
Grad Kaštela says that area created by the embankment of the sea in Kaštel Gomilica has two main values that surpass all others – the proximity of the sea and the view of Kaštilac, the castle was built in 1545 and is the only tower in Kaštela that is preserved in its original relationship to the sea. It is a symbol not only of Kaštela and Dalmatia, but often represents Croatia as well, when it was shown to the world during the filming of Game of Thrones a few years ago.
“The central space is clean and simple in shape, and everything around it is densely green with a combination of evergreen and deciduous species. That way there will always be something green, in winter the sun will penetrate all parts, and in summer, over time, everything will be in deep shade,” said Tadin, adding that trees which will be used would be especially resistant to pest attacks and will would give a special character throughout the seasons.
In the ‘park’ area there will also be benches, card tables, exercise equipment, children’s playgrounds, a skate park, water fountains and the like.
