Croatia looks set to go to a referendum to see whether it will amend the nation’s Constitution defining what a marriage is. The initiative “In the name of the family” have been collecting signatures at booths around the country the past few weeks asking the public if they were in favour of having it made part of the Constitution that a marriage would be defined only as a union between a man and a women.
The initiative said on Sunday that they had gathered more than 500,000 signatures and had met the number required to force a referendum on the issue. “In the name of the family” received support in Croatia from all large religious communities and some public figures such as Croatian football coach Igor Stimac, singer Marko Perkovic Thompson and high jumper Blanka Vlasic.
If the referendum is successful it would make gay marriages unconstitutional in Croatia.
