Međimurje, the northernmost part of Croatia, has some new tourist content after a museum of its intangible cultural heritage was opened in the city of Čakovec last night.
The museum, named “Riznica Međimurja” (Međimurje Treasures) presents the historical treasures and traditional values of the Međimurje region.
The attractive, multimedia and interactive exhibition of the museum is divided into two main units that offer a blend of historical and cultural heritage with state-of-the-art technology.
On the ground floor there is an exhibition called “Century of the Fortress” which interprets the turbulent history of the fortification of Čakovec castle, while on the first floor there is an exhibition that interprets the intangible heritage of Međimurje called “Miniatures”.
After touring the museum, visitors can climb to the top of the bell tower or enjoy the beautiful terrace at the foot of the bell tower where the cafe is located. Part of the exhibition is a playroom, where children can dress up as one of the members of the noble Zrinski family, partake in fencing, draw, and for young fans of technology there is kinetic sand in which they can build a castle.
“All of us who love our Međimurje today are extremely proud, proud because in a unique space we have embraced Međimurje history and values, Međimurje knowledge and intelligence, once again confirmed the ability to attract European funds and preserve the most valuable thing we have, and that is our identity,” pointed out the prefect of Međimurje County Matija Posavec during the opening of the museum.
The old town of Zrinski, its bastions, walls, palace and park are the heart of today’s modern Čakovec, so the mayor of Čakovec Ljerka Cividini was pleased to attend the opening of the museum, which is another top spot which will attract tourists to the successful continental Croatia destination.
