World football’s governing body FIFA have find the Croatian Football Federation 50,000 Swiss francs today (Wednesday) for offensive chants made by Croatian fans at the World Cup qualifier in March between Croatia and Serbia at Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium.
FIFA based their decision on reports from discrimination monitor ‘Fare’ who identified “at least seven different nationalist songs seen in the context of the Balkans as likely to cause hatred and lead to discriminatory acts.”
The Croatian Football Federation escaped with only a fine after FIFA earlier announced that they would enforce stadium closures for any discrimination cases this season. Croatia play Serbia in the return leg in Belgrade on 6 September.
