BC chapter of the Canadian Croatian Chamber of Commerce to award scholarships

Vancouver, BC, Canada, 5 October, 2021 –The BC chapter of the Canadian Croatian Chamber of Commerce has announced that the organization will award $2,000 in scholarships to high school students enrolled in an online Croatian course delivered by Croaticum – Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Parents of students accepted into the course will be contacted by the BC Chapter with further details.  

George Kovačić, President of the BC Chapter explains, “The interest to learn Croatian has been tremendous.  An obstacle is the €450 tuition.   To help offset the tuition cost the BC Chapter has decided to award $2,000 in scholarships among the students accepted into course.  The BC Chapter together with other Croatian community associations is working to obtain additional funds to further help offset tuition costs.  The ability to speak Croatian is key to increase trade and investment between Canada and Croatia.  It is an honour that our BC Chapter can help students learn and  improve their Croatian language abilities.” 

Working in collaboration with the University of Zagreb, the University of British Columbia (UBC), UBC’s Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia and Croatian community associations in Canada, an understanding has been reached to allow high school students in British Columbia to study Croatian through an online program delivered by Croaticum – Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language, University of Zagreb.

Upon successful completion of a course, students will be issued a certificate which can be presented to their high school for inclusion as an external course on their transcript. This program of studies will be accepted towards meeting the second language requirements for admission into UBC. Students who successfully complete a course will also be issued credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS credits are transferable to university credits allowing high school students to earn credits towards their future university studies.
