PHOTOS: Street Triptych brings new artworks to Zagreb streets

The third cycle of a project where the streets of Zagreb become an art studio continues, and this time the story is “led” by three excellent Croatian artists, of completely different styles.

ZAGREB, 29 October 2021 – Organised by the artistic collective Pimp My Pump and the Zagreb Tourist Board, the third cycle of Street Triptych (Ulični triptih) is going on.

Street triptych is a unique year-round program of street exhibitions that offers passers-by a cross-section of the current domestic street art scene, with Zagreb’s streets becoming richer and more colourful thanks to real small artistic masterpieces. 

The director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld, said: “When we launched this new project in March, we wanted to draw attention to the fact that painting public spaces does not necessarily mean vandalism, but that we can beautify our urban environment. Therefore, in the previous cycles, as well as in the last one for this year, we tried to point out with selected examples the need for systematic and comprehensive action at the community level and highlight the potential of graffiti to use for positive purposes. Through its regenerative and non-invasive concept, the street triptych contributes to the further quality development of our street art scene and is a project that the Tourist Board will continue to develop in the coming years.”

The combination of different generations and styles will mark the new edition of this unique “changing exhibition”, and three talented Croatian artists this time have brushes in their hands.

The central location of the project, the Zagreb Tourist Board Visitor Centre on Trg bana Jelačića 11, is signed by the well-known artist Lunar, who titled the work after his book of the same name “From Zagreb With Love”.

“The title of my book came from the approach to our guests-cartoonists, but also from their approach to me and the cooperation during their stay in foreign cities. What I learned in my city, I gladly passed on outside of it, as well as what I thought people in other communities did better, I gladly adopted, brought home, and shared. The groups of cats I often draw show different people and cultures with colours and elements that mix and repeat,” Lunar said.

The previously painted panel in Radićeva Street (46), was done by young Vedran Štimac from Pula, better known as Polite bastART. With his work, he paid tribute to one of the greatest Croatian artists, Julija Knifer.

“I am extremely glad to participate in the Street Triptych project, especially because in this way I have contributed to refreshing the urban vision of Zagreb. With this project, many established and non-established artists have the opportunity to send their message to their fellow citizens through the medium of street art. In addition, the works are in constant rotation, which enables the communication of social phenomena through the channel of artistic expression,” Štimac said.

The third location is the entrance to the Grič tunnel (from the former Art Park), and carries the idea of a mystical art series by the young painter Lav Paripović. 

“The cycle of archeological sites is based on the story of a fictitious civilisation and its legacy in this area. Through the search for suitable locations to discover a new site, a story of a mystical culture is developed about which little is known which implicates the various theories used to give the impression of the series. Anthropological thinking defines the presentation and aesthetic design of performance,” Lav added.

The setting of the Street Triptych changes in cycles – every three months the selected locations bring three new works of art signed by different authors from all over Croatia. Also, as an additional element of surprise, one of the three locations is different each time, so from previous painting cycles on the steps of Dolac market awaits the work of Mislav Lešić called Street Rhapsody while in Opatovina Park you can check out a view through the window into a more beautiful world of Sanja Stojković.

The next paintings has been announced for the beginning of 2022, and until then you have the opportunity to see this free exhibition in the centre of Zagreb every day.
