Davis Cup Finals: Croatia beats Australia

TURIN, 25 November 2021 – Croatia has made a great start to the Davis Cup Finals in Turin, Italy on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Australia.
Croatia are in Group D with Australia and Hungary and today they started their campaign in the perfect way.
23-year-old Borna Gojo, who is ranked 276th in the world, got Croatia off to a fantastic start when he beat world no.61 Alexei Popyrin in straight sets.
Gojo needed just under two hours to beat Popyrin 7-6(5), 7-5 to give Croatia a 1-0 lead.
“It was amazing. We have great support here, I would like to thank everyone who came to watch us,” said Goja, who was replacing his injured namesake Borna Ćorić, immediately after the win.
In the second match of the night, Marin Čilić was too good for Alex de Minaur, winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to give Croatia an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić made it 3-0 later in the evening when they won the doubles match 6-3, 6-1.
Croatia faces Hungary next on November 28th.
Six group winners and the two best second-placed national teams will play in the quarter-finals.
Group A: Spain, RTF, Ecuador
Group B: Canada, Kazakhstan, Sweden
Group C: France, Great Britain, Czech Republic
Group D: Croatia, Australia, Hungary
Group E: USA, Italy, Colombia
Group F: Serbia, Germany, Austria
