Davis Cup Finals: Croatia beats Italy to reach semi-finals

TURIN, 29 November 2021 – Croatia has beaten Italy 2-1 in Turin on Monday night to reach the semi-finals of the Davis Cup Finals. 

Borna Gojo, who has an ATP ranking of 279, gave Croatia their first point of the match when he beat  Lorenza Sonega s 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2. 

“It feels always amazing. We knew we had to get one point from our singles – we are confident in our doubles,” Gojo said after the win.

Marin Čilić was next on court against world no.10 Jannik Sinner. It was the first time they had faced each other and it was Čilić who had the upper hand in the first set, winning it 6-3. Both players would enjoy double breaks in the second set but it would be decided in a tie-break which the Italian would win. Sinner would take the deciding set 6-3 to level the match at 1-1.

In the deciding doubles match, world no.1 pairing of Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić showed their class, beating Sinner and Fabio Fognini in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to send Croatia into the semi-finals.

Croatia reached the quarter-finals after they won Group D with wins over Australia (3-0) and Hungary (2-1). 

The semi-final will be played in Madrid on Friday with Croatia’s opponent not known until tomorrow.
