The Blue World Institute in Lošinj recently captured footage of an interesting interaction between a dolphin mother and newborn in the Cres-Lošinj archipelago.
“We had the opportunity to record an interesting behaviour between mother and newborn. In this footage, that was recorded in Cres-Lošinj archipelago, you can observe a newborn having a gentle body-to-body contact with its mother Bonaca. In the first weeks of newborns life, rubbing on the mother’s lateral side, jaw, rostrum or near the eye is the most common form of socialising,” Blue World Institute said on its Facebook page.
The institute says that this type of behaviour is not easy to observe from a boat as it usually happens below the surface of the sea.
“Using a drone for our research purposes, we managed to capture this special moment,” they concluded.
Blue World Institute for Marine Research and Protection is a Croatian non-profit, non-governmental organisation based on the island of Lošinj. The area of their work is the entire Adriatic Sea, and their main interest is the research of large marine vertebrates – whales, sea turtles, and cartilaginous fish.
The activities they carry out are aimed at preserving the biological diversity of the sea, raising public awareness, and protecting the entire marine environment and sustainable development.
