Gymnast Tin Srbić, who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, won the award for the best sportsman for 2021.
Croatian President Zoran Milanović presented the award for the best sports crew in 2021 to Olympic gold medal rowers Martin and Valent Sinković. Apart from their gold medal performance in Tokyo, the brothers also became 5-time European champions this year.
The best women’s sports team award went to the Lokomotiva Handball Club, whilst Dinamo Zagreb took the award for the best men’s sports team.
Special awards from the Sports Association of the City of Zagreb to the most successful athletes with disabilities were received by table tennis players Anđela Mužinić Vincetić and Helena Dretar Karić and discus thrower Ivan Katanušić.
The annual awards for top results and sports activities were received by the Zagreb University Sports Federation, judoka Lara Cvjetko, freediver Mirela Kardašević, karateka Anđelo Kvesić and rower Damir Martin.
Nikola Mektić, Marin Čilić and Ivan Dodig received special awards for medals at the Olympic Games. The lifetime achievement award was received by the Kayak Canoe Club Zagreb – Olympian Matija Marinić, Branka Trzun-Makek, Željko Gobec, Mato Šebalj and Drago Diklić.
Special awards to the most successful coaches were received by Nikola Bralić (coach of Valent and Martin Sinković), Lucijan Krce (coach of Tin Srbić), Srećko Šuk (coach of Damir Martin), Roland Varga (coach of Ivan Katanušić) and Mirela Šikoronja Ivančin (coach of Anđela Mužinić Vincetić and Helene Dretar Karić).
Congratulating the most successful athletes on their successes and awards and recognitions, President Milanović said in his address that success always required coaches who he said were people without whom there is no success. “We owe great gratitude to these people, as well as to all those who came to the Olympics with great effort, empty pockets, fought, did not win medals, were close to difficult sports, with small scholarships and small financial opportunities. These are the miracles and that is what inspires,” said President Milanović.
The awards is organised annually by the Sports Association of the City of Zagreb.
