VIDEO: LADO showcase Croatian cultural traditions in Dubai

Croatia’s most famous folk dance and song ensemble had the honour of representing Croatia earlier this month at the EXPO Dubai 2020.
The programme opened on March 6, 2022 in Al Wasl Plaza on the occasion of the National Day of Croatia, which featured traditional music which was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
The impressive ambience of Al Wasl Plaza was enhanced by the uniqueness of the sounds of Istrian music, Međimurje songs, ojkanje, klapa songs and the unavoidable bećar.
Through the segments of performances on Earth, Sun, Sea stage, Plaza 2020 and Jubilee Park, LADO artists managed to show all the diversity of Croatian traditional culture.

In addition to the performances of artists, a presentation of folk costumes was held in the Croatian pavilion. The opening was also attended by a Croatian delegation, led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.

The presentation of Croatia at the world exhibition EXPO in Dubai stood out with a diverse program, in addition to the aforementioned presentation of costumes, the ensemble’s artists highlighted the diversity of Croatian traditional culture with several smaller performances in a reduced ensemble.
The concert of the art project LADO Electro was held on the biggest stage at the EXPO, the Jubilee stage with standard top sound and light effects, which once again confirmed how well the combination of traditional and contemporary art works.

The programme ended on March 7 with a big representative concert of the LADO ensemble at the Dubai Millennium Amphitheater, where Linđo, Primoštensko kolo, Valpovačko kolo and Baranja songs and dances with vocal-instrumental compositions of Moslavina, Međimurje and Zelina Prigorje were performed. The concert was preceded by an impressive performance by Croatian musicians Matej Meštrović and Borna Šercar.

The entire ensemble was faced with the challenge of providing insight into the diversity of Croatian traditional heritage in a short time with top performances.

The artistic director of the ensemble, Krunoslav Šokac, commented on the success achieved in Dubai. “We are pleased with the performances at the world exhibition, which managed to show all the diversity, and thus the beauty of traditional art through music, dance and clothing.”

The director of the ensemble, Ileana Jurin Bakotić, also commented on the presentation of Croatian traditional heritage, expressing satisfaction with the success of the globally prominent event. “I am proud and extremely honoured to have had the opportunity to present Croatia in this way.”

Upon their return from Dubai, the LADO ensemble is not resting, with a number of big concerts planned. The first of which is LADO Electro at the Tvornica Kulture on March 26.
