Biggest olive grower and oil event on Croatia’s biggest olive island

For the third time on the Croatian island of Brač, an island with a million olive trees, the only one to have an Olive Oil Museum and the World Olive Harvesting Championships, the 24th Noćnjak will be held at the Waterman Svpetrvs Resort from May 5 to 8.

Noćnjak is a big international event olive growers and oil mills where certified Brač olive oils with the mark of origin will be presented, awarding of annual recognitions and awarding of championship titles for oils and labels will take place.

There will also be round tables, scientific conferences, wine-olio gastro show, a small school of olive oil, a study tour of Supetar with practical olive growing and more.

The event is traditionally organised by the Cooperative Association of Dalmatia and under the auspices of several ministries, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce and the Split-Dalmatia County, and this year under the auspices of the host – the Tourist Board of Supetar and Supetar town.

The biggest ‘olive’ island

Brač olive oil is the 33rd Croatian product entered in the register of protected designations of origin and geographical origin, after Brač varenik it is the second from this island. This is a great tribute to the olive growers of Brač and the island where, presumably, the first olive tree was planted by the ancient Greeks.

In cooperation with the agricultural cooperatives of Postira, Selce, Bol and Milna, the protection of the original origin at the EU level was initiated by the Agricultural Cooperative Supetar, and its director Tija Mlinac points out that olives are grown on about 1.9 thousand hectares of agricultural land on Brač. is a total of about two-thirds of all agricultural crops on the island.

“Brac today has seven modern plants that enable faster processing of harvested fruit into top quality oil, and the form is our most common variety, resistant to drought, wind and low temperatures, so it is suitable for growing on sparse, shallow and rocky terrain,” says Mlinac.

Tourists love Brač olive oil

“Tourists do not return home from their vacation in Supetar without Brač olive oil, souvenirs made of Brač stone or Brač varenik. A six-kilometer walk along the “Olive Ways” hiking trail which begins and ends in Mirci is one of their favorite activities, the Museum of Olive Oil of the Cukrov family in the picturesque Skrip is an island attraction, and for years in October in Postira organised the World Raspberry Harvest Championship, which is gladly attended by tourists. Our cuisine is inconceivable without Brač olive oil, which will give each dish a special taste,” points out Ive Cvitanić, director of the Tourist Board of the town of Supetar.
