Years are to be counted, life is to be lived. You just have to be honest and fair – that is the message from Marija Stanić from the Croatian city of Osijek, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday together with her family and friends.
Marija was born on May 5, 1922 in Lika. She first moved to Vojvodina in 1946, and then to Osijek, where he has lived since 1952.
She has two daughters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Despite her advanced age, Marija is vital enough to still live alone.
Croatia’s latest centurion celebrated with cake and a bouquet of flowers, with Deputy Mayor of the city Dragan Vulin joining the celebrations and congratulating Marija on reaching the milestone on behalf of the City of Osijek and Mayor Ivan Radić.
“First of all, I would like to wish Mrs. Marija Stanić all the best, on my own behalf and on behalf of Mayor Ivan Radić. I would say something that my grandmother told me: While the days go on, let the strength go on too. It’s amazing that she is independent, let her stay that way as long as she can, like today. She lives alone, she serves herself, it is a real rarity, let her health keep serving her,” said Vulin, before adding.
“We are at her disposal to help her, along with her family.”
Osijek is committed to helping its elderly citizens within the framework of Christmas and Easter payments, benefits for public transport and organised care, the City of Osijek said.
