With the intonations of the American and Croatian national anthems, performed by Petra Tulic and AnnMarie Boskovich, 4th generation Croatian Americans, the 71st St. Anthony’s Croatian Picnic started in Los Angeles last weekend.
The picnic was opened by Heidi Wohlfahrt Granic, director of the kolo group Croatia, president of the financial council of the parish of St. Anthony’s from Los Angeles, and organiser of the 71st Croatian Picnic with Katica Ban, Zora Cadovac and Kreso Grbavac.
Don Ivan Jordan, pastor of the parish of St. Anthony’s, then welcomed and blessed all present.
Then, on behalf of the Croatian Embassy in Washington DC, Ambassador Pjer Simunovic and the Consul General on behalf of the Consulate General of Los Angeles, Renee Pea, addressed the crowd.
Seniors of the kolo group Croatia performed songs and dances from Posavina, choreographed by Željko Jergan. And Nikoleta and Juliana Ban also sang two Croatian songs as part of the program.
After the program, Željko also held a Kolo clinic, where he taught songs and dances of Slavonia, Medjimurje, Lika, Bačka and Zagorje.
There was also a boćanje (bocce) competition organised by Jure Glamuzin, and many fun activities for young and old.
The Croatian Catholic Church of St. Anthony in Los Angeles organised a silent auction as part of the picnic. Items auctioned included signed jerseys of the Croatian national football team, Luka Modrić, LA Clippers star Ivica Zubac, Davor Šuker, Marin Čilić, Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb, as well as books and more.
All the money raised will be used to repair the parish hall, which was destroyed last year by fire and floods.
After the silent auction, the festivities continued with Croatian culinary specialties, desserts and music from Bravo Band from Chicago.
The MC of the program was Borislav Brkic.
