300-year-old tradition held in the Croatian coastal town of Rogoznica

A tradition which has taken place for the past 300 years has taken place once again in the tourist village of Rogoznica on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast.
The return of the painting of Our Lady by boat from the Parish Church to the Chapel on the Gradina peninsula took place last week.
The traditional event was accompanied by a procession on land and at sea and was attended by numerous believers and tourists for whom it is a special attraction.

The return of Our Lady’s painting to the Chapel is a spiritual tradition in Rogoznica which has taken place now for 300 years.
According to the local legend, a fisherman fishing on the Gradina peninsula saw an unusual light.
As he approached he saw a sacred painting depicting the Virgin Mary visiting Elizabeth. He even took the painting home three times, but it always inexplicably returned to the same place.

The people of Rogoznica interpreted this as Our Lady’s sign, so they built a chapel at that place as a sign of worship.

Rogoznica lies in the southernmost part of the Šibenik-Knin County, in a deep bay sheltered from wind, about 30 km from Šibenik.
