Croatian discus champion Sandra Perković has created athletics history on Tuesday night at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, Germany.
Sandra (32) won the gold medal with a throw of 67.95 metres to become the European champion for the sixth time in a row.
The Croatian is now the first person to win six gold medals in a row at the European Championships.
Sandra, who eased into tonight’s final with a throw of 65,94 metres in qualifying, took the lead in the final with a throw of 65.77 metres with her 2nd attempt.
After losing her lead, she would regain it with her fifth attempt when she would throw 67.95 metres. This effort would not be beaten and the celebrations would begin for the Croatian.
Germany’s Kristin Pudenz took second place, with her fellow German Claudine Vita finishing in third place.
Sandra’s five other European golds came in Barcelona (2010), when she became the youngest ever European champion in women’s discus, in Helsinki (2012), Zürich in 2014, Amsterdam in 2016 and Berlin in 2018. The European Championships were cancelled in 2020.
Sandra is also a two-time World (2013 & 2017) and Olympic champion, winning gold in 2012 in London and in 2016 in Rio.
