PHOTOS: Best pršut award goes to Istrian producer at biggest fair in the region

The best pršuts from the Mediterranean and Central Europe gathered again in Tinjan, Istria as the14th International Pršut Fair (ISAP) opened on Friday.
Pisinium pršut from Pazin in Istria, which scored the most points in the expert evaluation, was declared the champion prsut of the fair.

Pisinium was also the champion in the category of Istrian pršut, in which gold medals were also won by Jelenić (Sveti Petar u Šuma) and Dujmović (Kringa), silver medals were awarded to Selo Mekiši (Mekiši near Vižinada), Movimento (Vošteni) and Antolović (Tinjan), and bronze to Daniele (Višnjan) and Milohanić (Tinjan).

At the official opening of the 14th ISAP, the head of the Municipality of Tinjan, Goran Hrvatin, welcomed all exhibitors and visitors to the “municipality of Istrian pršut” and pointed out that pršut for this part of Istria is not only important for the preservation of tradition, but also contributes to tourism, which is shown by the increasing tourism results.

The President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, romantically recalled a detail from his childhood when the smell of pršut from his grandfather’s tavern was one of the first sensory sensations he remembered. “Today, pršut is a top product that serves as an example of how to make a product with added value, and the traditional knowledge of making pršut is today turning into a profitable business,” said President Milanović at the official opening of ISAP in Tinjan, and congratulated the award winners for the quality of their pršuts.

29 pršut producers from all over Croatia, as well as from Italy, Spain and Montenegro were at the fair. Seven gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze medals were awarded.
Mrki (Pakovo Selo near Drniš) won gold in the category of best smoked pršut. Gold medals were also won by Smjeli pršut (Dugopolje) in the category of best Dalmatian pršut and Montenegrin pršut Martex and Mianja, both from Cetinje, won a gold medal in the category of smoked pršut.

Silver medals were awarded to Bel Cro Trade in the category of best Drniš pršut, and in the category of unsmoked pršut they went to Franjul (Sveti Petar u Šuma), Jelenić (Sveti Petar u Šuma), Compagnia del Festival (Langhirano, Italy) and Buršić (Vodnjan); and in the smoked pršut category to Interproduct, Zrnožit and Monsante, all three from Cetinje in Montenegro.

Brronze medals were won in the Krk pršut category to the Žužić butcher shop (Krk); in the category of unsmoked pršut category to Central de compras del suroeste (Brovales, Spain), and in the category of smoked pršut to Drniška delicije Maran (Trbounje kod Drniš), OPG Goran Jančo (Punitovci), Roca (Stankovci) and Brkić (Lozovac).

At the three-day fair, which ends on Sunday, around forty exhibitors of pršut and other authentic products are there, among them about thirty pršut producers. In addition to Croatian pršuts with protected designations of origin or geographical origin (namely Istrian, Dalmatian and Drniš prosciutto), ISAP also presents pršut from Italy, Austria, Hungary, Spain and Montenegro, along with Istrian producers of cheese, wine and other indigenous products.
