Advent in Vukovar begins with lighting of first candle

The 25th Advent in Vukovar has opened in the eastern Croatian city with the lighting of the first Advent candle by mayor Ivan Penava.
This year’s Advent festivities in Vukovar are symbolically named “Vukovar – City of Encounters”, and the slogan of Advent in Vukovar, which takes place until December 24, 2022 in the Eltz Castle park, is “Advent full of magic”.

Mayor Ivan Penava lit the first Advent candle, which symbolizes hope and anticipation, with the wish that prosperity fills every home in Vukovar and that the people of Vukovar continue to gather in the pre-holiday season in the beauty of togetherness, the richness of tradition and the holiday spirit in the coming years.

“May the peace of the holidays fill the homes of all friends of Vukovar, but also the homes of war-affected Ukraine and all other war-affected countries, the homes of the diaspora and the hearts of our soldiers who are on peacekeeping military missions around the world and sailors,” said Penava.

“For 25 years we met, first in the ruined Eltz castle, and always lit Advent candles, creating beautiful performances, relying on tradition, but also contemporary artistic expressions,” said the director of the Vukovar City Museum Ružica Marić on this occasion. During the past 25 years, she added, Vukovar has remained an open city for all people of good will.

The Advent wreath was blessed by guardian Josip Poleto, saying that it is the time of Advent and the time of friendship, meeting and love.
The opening program was accompanied by the opening of the ice skating rink, a concert by the band Akvarel and a gastronomic offer.

Until December 24, Advent in Vukovar will bring a handful of interesting holiday contents and activities that will surely be enjoyed by many Vukovar residents and tourists.

Ice magic on the ice skating rink in the park of Dvor Eltz offers a special experience for all lovers of winter sports activities. As every year, the use of skates and the rink is free for all visitors, and its working hours are from 09:00 to 21:00, except on Fridays and Saturdays when the rink is open until 22:00.
