VIDEO: Amazing sight as two whale pods merge near Croatian island

Whale sightings are not uncommon in the Adriatic Sea, but a recent video captured near the island of Vis is a rare treat. 

The footage shows a group of approximately a dozen whales swimming in the waters near the town of Komiža on the island of Vis, and it’s almost hard to believe. 

Branimir Biočić, who witnessed it, spoke to Morski.hr about the incredible experience.

According to Biočić, he and his team were filming in front of Komiža when they spotted a group of three to five whales. After about 15 minutes, they noticed another pod of similar size. The two groups soon joined together, and the video was taken about 20 minutes later, showing approximately 10 individuals.

The whales were headed from the direction of Lastovo towards Barjaci. When the first group was approached with a drone, they dived and disappeared for about 10 minutes. Biočić and his team followed them and were delighted to see the whales resurface, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capture these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Biočić’s colleague, Stefan Torres, captured the stunning footage using a drone, providing an aerial view of the island of Vis’s crystal-clear waters and indented coastline. Torres described the experience as “hypnotizing,” and it’s easy to see why.

The whales were finback whales, which are are the second-largest species on Earth after the blue whale. Over the past few years a number have been spotted along the Croatian coast.
