Chicago recently played host to an extraordinary culinary event that celebrated the rich flavors of Croatia.
The Croatian Wine Dinner, held on Wednesday, May 31st, and Thursday, June 1st, at Stefani Prime, turned out to be a great success, with both nights selling out within 24 hours. The event drew a total of about 120 eager guests, who were treated to an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
The mastermind behind this evening was Luka Ilic, the son-in-law of Phil Stefani, who is the founder of the renowned restaurant group that has been a staple in Chicago’s culinary scene for over four decades.
The vision for incorporating his Croatian heritage into the business led him to organize this one-of-a-kind event. Assisting him were his wife Gina and her brother Anthony, who have served as Managing Partners of the company for nearly a decade.
Throughout his life, he has been deeply engaged in various Croatian organizations, such as the Croatian School, the Croatian Vines Folklore Group, and even the Croatian Cultural Center Board. Currently, he holds the prestigious position of President of the ACAP (Association of Croatian American Professionals) Chicago Chapter.
It was at an ACAP conference in New York last year that he had the pleasure of meeting Mirena Bagur, the Co-Founder of Croatian Premium Wines. Their encounter marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration, culminating in the Croatian Wine Dinner.
The anticipation for the event was palpable, as wine enthusiasts and food connoisseurs alike clamored for the chance to savor the delectable Croatian flavors, which included delights like crni rižot, octopus, lamb and fritule.
Each night’s program featured a meticulously crafted four-course dinner, expertly paired with a selection of exquisite Croatian wines.
The evenings were not only a feast for the palate but also a visual treat. In the spirit of sharing the joyous occasion, attendees were treated to a plethora of captivating photographs capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the Croatian Wine Dinner.
Adding to the excitement, each night’s festivities included a raffle draw. The generous contribution from Peter Hazdovac, representing Adriatic Travel in San Pedro, CA, provided the lucky winners with an opportunity to embark on an unforgettable adventure. The prizes consisted of two nights’ accommodation in a luxurious two-bedroom apartment in Dubrovnik, along with an airport transfer and a fascinating two-hour walking tour of Dubrovnik’s enchanting Old Town.
The Croatian Wine Dinner was a testament to the power of cultural heritage and culinary excellence. The passion for their Croatian roots, combined with the expertise of Mirena Bagur and Croatian Premium Wines, brought forth an event that united the Chicago community in a celebration of flavors and traditions.
The overwhelming success and demand for this unique experience serve as a testament to the growing appreciation for Croatian wine and cuisine.
