A sheep’s milk cheese from the Croatian region of Istria has come up trumps at the the International Cheese & Dairy Awards 2023 held in the United Kingdom.
Istrian sheep’s milk cheese Špin from Agrolaguna has been named the best cheese in the world in the category of hard sheep’s milk cheeses, winning the gold medal and trophy in that category at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards 2023 held in the United Kingdom.
This competition represents the largest global platform for promoting cheese and dairy product manufacturers, receiving over 5,500 cheese samples from around the world every year. Therefore, this world recognition confirms that Istrian cheeses are truly part of the elite group of the best in class.
“This cheese is one of the gastronomic gems of Istria, and its protected designation of origin best presents the uniqueness of its structure and taste. The trophy is a great reward for the entire team involved in the production process and proves that hard work always pays off. As soon as this cheese hit the market, it gained loyal customers, and in the meantime, it has confirmed its top quality with a series of international awards, of which we are particularly pleased,” says Krunoslav Salaj, the manager at the Špin cheese factory.
Nerina Zec, the President of the Management Board of Agrolaguna, also expresses her satisfaction and emphasizes the importance of continuous awards and recognition that the company receives for its cheeses, wines, and oils.
“This confirms that the focus on quality, nurturing tradition, and respecting authenticity is the right direction for the development of our brands. We are extremely pleased when the quality, this time of sheep cheese, is recognized by eminent world experts, but it is even more important to us that our customers confirm it by choosing our products for their table. Among them, there is an increasing number of foreign customers who particularly appreciate the authenticity and quality of premium domestic products that Agrolaguna specializes in,” says Nerina Zec.
Cheeses at the Špin cheese factory are produced in a traditional way that requires a lot of manual work, from production preparation to cheese aging.
No fat is removed from the milk, and no additives are added, ensuring that the cheeses always have a unique taste. Istrian Špin cheeses are exclusively made from fresh milk, the quality of which is continuously monitored by Agrolaguna’s team of experts.
Over 300 tons of high-quality hard cheeses, tailored to the needs of consumers, are released to the market annually. Istrian Špin cheeses can be purchased at all well-stocked retail chains.
