That a trip to the town of Bakar, situated south of Rijeka at the end of Bakar bay on the northern Adriatic coast, is not just a regular sightseeing tour has been strongly recognized over the last few years. Yet Bakar never ceases to amaze with its boundless imagination. The town constantly and effectively steers clear of tedious tourist excursions and instead provides unique thematic trips to create an exceptional experience for each visitor.
Playful Bakar
Another season of the popular „Margaretino leto“ (Margaret’s Summer) festival in Bakar began with the tour called „Playful Bakar”. The self-guided exploration of the town with a dash of competitive spirit proved to be a hit. Following the chosen route in a pocket booklet, visitors (or should we call them explorers!) walked around the town, solving a puzzle along the way.
Even the most seasoned adults find exploring the town a challenge that awakens their innocent, childlike enthusiasm for play and fun. The “Playful Bakar” self-guided tour has successfully opened the festival days, and it is accessible at any time in both Croatian and English. You can find all the guidelines and the booklet in the Tourist Office of the Town of Bakar.
Climb Into the Prehistory
Bakar tourist innovations don’t end here. Earlier this year, a theme promenade to the peak of Črni Vrh above the famous Bakarski Prezidi vineyards has been opened. While climbing to the top, where remains of the prehistoric fort lie, visitors will get answers to the questions such as: how did this distinctive landscape get its shape? Who built the drystones? Why here? And the most important one: where is the Bakarska vodica sparkling wine made?
Magnificent vistas of the Bay of Bakar have remained intact because the tales about this area brilliantly blend into the landscape ‒ we read about them from the balcony like a postcard and discover them hidden among the stones. The promenade is always open, but during the Margaretino leto festivity, on Aug 3rd, interpreter Iva Silla will tell unforgettable tales from this scenic viewpoint. Join us on these long-paved trails!
Frankopans or the Tuhobić Peak? Both!
For those to whom the August date seems too far away, Bakar offers “The Trail of the Frankopans” historical interpretation tour. On the 20th of July, the route inspired by the legacy of the famous noble family Frankopan will take walkers to the old town of Hreljin. The tour will offer the best of the history of the famous Croatian nobles, as well as enjoying the unforgettable sunset hugging the sea.
Speaking of experiences merged out of culture and outdoor activities, let us not forget the tour on 27th of July. Renowned Bakar interpreter Bore Štrbac will take us to the peak of Tuhobić. Although a certain fitness prowess will benefit you during this climb, each step will ultimately be rewarded with a stunning panorama view of the Kvarner Bay horizon on the one side, and the highland beauties of Gorski kotar on the other one.
