ZAGREB, 21 July (Hina) – Croatian secondary school students won four medals at the 3rd The European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics which took place between 15 and 21 July in Lund, Sweden.
Lara Semeš won a gold and Maša Dobrić a silver, while Iva Tadić and Lana Škarica each won a bronze.
The international competition in programming involved 189 female students from 52 countries, the Croatian Association of IT Professionals said on Friday.
The EGOI competition, as per its regulations, consists of solving 8 problem tasks over 2 days of competition, using the programming languages Python or C++ under the Linux operating system. Female students compete individually, and each participating country is represented by a team of four female students (up to 20 years of age) and two team leaders.
The initiative to launch this competition, aimed at fostering girls’ interest in computer science, originated at the European level three years ago. The driving force behind it was the fact that a significantly smaller number of women, compared to men worldwide, including Croatia, choose to study or work in the field of computer science.
The primary goal of EGOI is to empower young girls to explore the exciting world of computer science and programming. By providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and problem-solving abilities, we hope to bridge the gender gap in the field and encourage more girls to pursue careers and studies in computer science.
