Croatia wins the Hopman Cup

Croatia has won the Hopman Cup in tennis after beating Switzerland in the final on Sunday in the French city of Nice.
Donna Vekić gave Croatia a 1-0 lead in the opening match of the final when she comfortably beat Celine Naef in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Needing just on more point out of the remaining two matches, Borna Ćorić then took to the court to take on Leandro Riedi. The 26-year-old Croatian got off to a great start and took the first set after dropping just the one game.
Riedi would fight back in the second set and race out to an early lead, but the experienced Ćorić would fight back and take the match 6-1, 6-4 to seal the Hopman Cup for Croatia.

Croatia beat Belgium on Friday before defeating Spain 2-1 in the semi-final with Vekić and Ćorić beating Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and Rebeka Masarova in the doubles decider.

The Hopman Cup is an international tournament that features teams comprised of a male and female player. After being held in Perth, Australia, from 1989 to 2019, this is the first edition of the Hopman Cup to take place in Europe.
Croatia has previously won the Hopman Cup once, back in 1996 when it was represented by Goran Ivanišević and Iva Majoli. In the final, they beat the Swiss team of Martina Hingis and Marc Rosset.
