ZAGREB, 28 September 2023 – It was an extraordinary day yesterday at the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Zagreb with two mothers giving birth to triplets within a few hours, Dnevnik.hr reported.
The hospital experienced a real little baby boom on Wednesday with a record number of mothers giving birth, and then, within just a few hours, two mothers gave birth to triplets.
“We can see for ourselves on the ward that there is a really high turnover of expectant mothers and pregnant women. It’s quite hectic here,” Ivana, who was also about to give birth, told Nova TV.
The Sisters of Mercy Clinical Hospital echoed with the cries of babies, the hurried steps of midwives and doctors who hadn’t stopped in the last 24 hours.
“If we look at the number of children born during last night’s shift, or the entire past day, we had a real baby boom here at the hospital. There were also many twins. Normally, the frequency of twin births is around 30 women per thousand pregnant women,” says the Head of the Clinic for Women’s Diseases and Obstetrics, Krunoslav Kuna.
An even rarer occurrence is a pregnant woman carrying triplets, which happens to one or two expectant mothers per thousand.
It’s quite a rarity that on the same day, within 24 hours, two women gave birth who were carrying triplets, so we really witnessed an event that occurs maybe once in an entire working lifetime,” emphasised Kuna.
The mothers of the triplets are having a well-deserved rest, while other mothers hold their offspring in their arms.
In 2022, 2,625 fewer children were born in Croatia than in 2021.
