Majorettes from the Croatian Island of Krk and the central village of Krašić, have taken part in the Columbus Day Parade in New York for the first time.
The girls, proudly carrying the Croatian flag and the flags of Punat and Krašić, performed in the parade on Monday, October 9th.
At the Croatian Catholic Mission of Bl. Ivan Merz in Astoria, NY, Don Saša Ilijić, along with many Croatian parishioners, especially those from the island of Krk, welcomed the majorettes from the Island of Krk and Krašić on Sunday, October 8th.
Croatian Catholic Mission of Bl. Ivan Merz was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the beatification of Bl. Alojzije Stepinac, and the celebration was enhanced by the performance of the Croatian majorettes.
Following the Mass, in front of the church, they put on a wonderful show with several of their choreographies, delighting the Croatian community and passersby, for which Don Saša Iljić expressed his special gratitude.
Elizabeta Mikelj, the majorettes’ leader, stated that she was incredibly proud because, for the first time in New York, on Fifth Avenue, the Croatian flag and the flags of Punat and Krašić were proudly displayed in the Columbus Day Parade, with her girls in the leading roles.
Croatians in New York were thrilled by the magnificent performance of these wonderful girls and hope to see them in the Columbus Day Parade for many more years to come.
