Women And Power – Not A Popular Mix In Croatia

Positions of power are still heavily dominated by men in Croatia, according to the latest gender statistics from the recent local elections issued by the State Election Commission.

Out of 20 counties in Croatia, only one, the Sisak-Moslavina county, has a woman at the helm, whilst out of 555 cities and municipalities, 93% of Mayor’s elected were men, with only 39 cities or municipalities are led by women.
Four counties – Bjelovar-Bilogora, Lika-Senj, Virovitica-Podravina and Dubrovnik-Neretva, are completely male dominated with not one office of the 73 in those counties led by a woman. In five other counties, which have 123 cities and municipalities, women have positions of power in just one city in each of the five counties. The counties on top of the list for the ratio of women in power are the Zagreb county and the Primorje-Gorski kotar County in Western Croatia.
