Marija Vukašina: Proudly Croatian on the global stage

In a showcase of beauty and culture, 21-year-old Marija Vukašina graced the stage at the Miss Tourism World pageant in Quanzhou, China, last week, representing Croatia among 63 countries from around the globe.
Though she may not have clinched a spot in the top 10, Marija’s journey left a mark on the hearts of millions and earned her the coveted title of Miss Sunshine 2nd Runner Up, along with recognition as the Tourism Ambassador of Croatia in China.

Marija, proud to be Croatian, took the opportunity to showcase the rich cultural tapestry of her homeland. Wearing a stunning national costume crafted by renowned designer Diana Hunić.
“I presented Croatia with the greatest pride. I always say in my interviews that I am proud to be Croatian and that no matter where I go, Croatia has a special place in my heart. The national dress I wore is a visual symphony of traditional Croatian embroidery from the Posavina region’s folk costumes, masterfully interwoven with contemporary aesthetics,” she told us.

Marija, who is originally from Zadar on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, also wore evening dresses designed by Vesna Rimac and Ivana Jurić.

Despite Croatia’s small size, Marija found immense support from the Chinese audience, who displayed a deep love for Croatia, its football team, and iconic locations like Dubrovnik.

When asked about Croatia’s allure as a tourist destination, Marija couldn’t help but extol the beauty of her homeland. For her, Croatia’s charm lies in its breathtaking sea, picturesque coastline, and the enchanting islands dotting the Adriatic.
“Croatia has so much to offer in the Continental part as well. Plitvice Lakes are something that I truly believe the whole world has to visit. Let’s not forget Dubrovnik that has specific architecture. Many films and series were filmed there. I always mentioned that the famous Game of Thrones was filmed in Dubrovnik. I originally come from Zadar and my favourite place is definitely the Sea Organ and the Church of St. Donat. Whenever I need time to relax, that is the place I go and listen to beautiful sounds of Sea Organ,” she adds.

Looking ahead, Marija’s career plans involve completing her studies in economics and pursuing an international modelling career. With dreams set on making waves in Turkey and China, she remains steadfast in her goal to inspire young women to chase their dreams relentlessly.

“Right now my plans are to keep up with my modelling career in Turkey and China. I also want to inspire young women to go after their dreams, because when you refuse to give up, magic happens. No matter where my career leads me, I will always be happy to return to my home, Croatia,” she told us.

Marija also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to compete and remains hopeful for a chance to represent Croatia on the international stage once again.
