Osijek set to construct Croatia’s largest hospital

The eastern city of Osijek is set to embark on the construction of Croatia’s largest hospital, the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek (KBC Osijek), located near the city’s southern bypass.

In financial terms, the project is seven times more valuable than the recently built Opus Arena stadium in the same city, with a projected cost exceeding 715 million euros, covering both construction and high-end equipment.

The final conference for the project, “Preparation of the Strategic Project for the Construction of the New KBC Osijek,” co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund, took place on December 27, 2023. The purpose of the conference was to present the project’s results to stakeholders, media, and the wider public.

Sanja Pešić, Assistant Director for Financial Affairs, opened the conference with welcoming remarks, emphasizing the project’s significance for Eastern Croatia. Nataša Tramišak, a parliamentary representative, highlighted the importance of completing the technical and study documentation phase, marking a crucial step towards realizing the new Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek. She underscored the potential positive impact on the region’s quality of life and standards.

Darko Ojvan, Director of Respect-ing, discussed the preparation of project-technical documentation during the conference. Ojvan emphasized that this was Respect-ing’s most extensive project, involving a team of around 60 experts. The presentation included an animation showcasing the new hospital’s design, location, and various facilities, such as technical rooms, entrances, helipads, reception areas, emergency services, kitchens, pharmacies, and more. The future facility is planned to have six floors, featuring 1400 parking spaces and 38 surgical theaters, with the entire project estimated at around 700 million euros.

The project, spanning from May 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, encompassed the feasibility study and the development of the main project for the new KBC Osijek. Sanja Pešić provided basic project information and progress updates, stating that the total amount of 4,684,318.80 euros was spent as planned. The European Union contributed 85% of the project’s value (3,981,670.98 euros), with the remaining 15% (702,647.82 euros) funded by KBC Osijek and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia.

The project aims to address the current limitations of the existing KBC Osijek, including insufficient capacity, outdated facilities, and inefficient processes. The overall goal is to enhance the standard of living and healthcare quality, considering that KBC Osijek serves as the sole Clinical Hospital Center for five counties in Eastern Croatia. At the conclusion of the conference, Pešić expressed satisfaction with all stakeholders and eagerly anticipated the next steps leading to the prompt realization of the new KBC complex.
