Croatia has made a sensational start to the 2024 EHF European Men’s Handball Championship in Germany tonight.
Croatia barely put a foot wrong as they caused a huge upset against reigning European runners-up Spain, winning 39-29.
Croatia led from the start and took and early 6-1 lead. They managed to keep their advantage throughout the first half and would go in at the break 18-14 up. A four-goal blitz to start the second half saw Croatia extend their lead to 22-14.
With a big Croatian contingent in the stands, man of the match Ivan Martinović and Mario Šoštarić scored 8 goals each as Croatia extended their lead to 10 goals and helped them record one of their more memorable victories.
“Congratulations to my guys. I can not rememeber when Spain last lost by 10 goals. When you defend as well as we did it is hard to lose. It is not easy to beat Spain, especially by 10 goals. We will celebrate a bit and then focus on our next opponents. My guys played so good I do not have much more to say, but we still have a lot of work to do. Thanks to the fans who also turned up,” said Croatia coach Goran Perkovac.
Croatia faces Austria next on Sunday, followed by Romania in their last Group B match on Tuesday.
