Međimurje County Museum named among best in Europe

ZAGREB, 7 May (Hina) – The finals for the European Museum of the Year Award took place In Portimao, Portugal and the Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec, as Croatia’s sole representative, found itself among the best European museums, Međimurje County said on Sunday.
The oldest European museum award is given by the European Museum Forum and although victory was so close this time, reaching the finals is of exceptional significance and represents recognition from the museum profession, the county said.
The Međimurje County Museum Čakovec is a comprehensive regional museum located in the palace of the Old Town of Čakovec.
Founded on February 19, 1954, as the City Museum Čakovec, it houses approximately 25,000 items organized into 51 museum collections of historical, archaeological, ethnological, technical, natural history, and artistic significance.
County Prefect Matija Posavec was present at the finals and said the developmental strategy for presenting the cultural and historical heritage and its connection to tourism received a new confirmation of its success.
The collaboration between the county, its Tourist Board, and the Međimurje County Museum on the Treasures of Međimurje project proved to be an excellent move, as it enriches the region’s tourism product, represents intangible cultural heritage and makes Međimurje recognisable beyond Croatia, he said.
This year the Međimurje County Museum celebrates its 70th anniversary. Its participation in the EMYA finals was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture.
