While the beaches of Dalmatia and the beauty of Istria often steal the spotlight when it comes to Croatian getaways, there’s a lesser-known gem waiting to be discovered just a stone’s throw away from Zagreb.

Tucked away in the heart of Croatia is the Bjelovar-Bilogora County, and it is home to some great spots, especially for weekend family escapes.

Only an hour and half from Zagreb, we decided to check out Garešnica and we were not disappointed.

Bursting with natural beauty, lush landscapes and friendly, welcoming locals, Garešnica offers plenty for visitors seeking an authentic experience amongst nature.

We first checked out the Natura 2000 Visitor Centre.

Also at the Natura 2000 Visitor Centre you can learn about one of Garešnica’s famous sons – singer and songwriter Ivo Robić. The success of his song ‘Morgen’ in 1959 propelled him to international stardom as he became the first Croatian musician to conquer the American music charts.

The instrument whisperer

The centre also hosts a mini lab, available to rent out for groups, and If you’re in luck, you might stumble upon Garešnica’s true musical treasure, Vjekoslav Martinić, a music teacher and a huge part of Garešnica’s traditional music and folklore scene.

Martinić, who is aptly nicknamed “the instrument whisperer” by locals, is an expert for traditional Croatian instruments – such as diplica, dude, dvojnice, jedinka, strančica, trstenice – a majority of which he not only plays, but also services and produces.
