Croatia has picked up a gold and silver medal at the World Deaf Athletics Championships, which are held in Taipei City from 18th to 23rd July.
The first medal, a silver in discus throw, was won by Mia Nekić, who achieved a personal best of 44.05 metres in her debut appearance at the World Championships.
No one surpassed her throw until the end of the competition, with the gold medal going to Matuškova from the Czech Republic, also achieved in the first round.
“Although this is my first senior World Championships for the deaf and the conditions were different from what I’m used to, I gave it my all. I believe I still have a lot of potential to show at the Deaflympics in Tokyo,” said Mia Nekić after winning the silver.
Mia had her first senior competition last year at the European Championships, where she placed 4th in discus throw and 5th in shot put.
Today, Laura Štefanac won her first world gold in the javelin throw.
Following two gold medals at the Deaflympics and two golds at the European Championships, Laura secured her second medal at the World Championships.
Her winning throw measured 47.43 metres, setting a new championship record.
“The feeling is fantastic. I had planned to win the world gold this season, which was missing from my collection. Unfortunately, I didn’t break the world record, which was also in the plan, but the most important thing is that the gold is here,” stated Laura Štefanac after winning gold.
The championships also saw participation from Jakob Ivan Košak, who reached the semi-finals in the 100 metres and 200 metres races, and Viktor Barešić, who debuted at the senior level and placed 13th in the shot put.
The homecoming for our athletes is scheduled for Wednesday, 24th July, at Franjo Tuđman Airport at 8 a.m. Flight number: TK1053.
