Croatian tennis player Donna Vekić has won the silver medal in the women’s singles at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.

Vekić had made history by becoming the first Croatian ever to reach the final of the women’s singles event at the Olympics.

The 28-year-old from Osijek has been in exceptional form throughout the tournament and ultimately secured a silver medal, marking a significant achievement in her career.

Vekić faced China’s Zheng Qinwen, the world number 7, in the final on Saturday. Despite a valiant effort, Vekić was defeated with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Her journey to the final, however, provided plenty of exciting moments and pride for Croatian fans.

Throughout the tournament, Vekić delivered some incredible performances. She defeated Slovakia’s Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the semi-final and overcame Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-final.

Her most notable victory came in the round of 16 when she beat world number two Coco Gauff.

Vekić’s Olympic success continues her impressive summer form. Last month, she achieved her best performance at a singles major by reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon.

Croatia now has a total of four medals so far in Paris. In addition to Vekić’s silver in tennis, the country has secured two gold medals: Barbara Matić in judo and Martin and Valent Sinković in rowing.

Miran Maričić also added to the tally with a bronze in shooting.
