Netflix’s production is filming the second season of the highly successful and popular Polish TV series 1670 on the Croatian island of Vir.
During pre-production, locations such as Murter, Čiovo, and Starigrad in Croatia were scouted, but in the end, Duboka Draga on Vir Island was chosen as the most exotic spot, Kazimir Škrbić writes for Zadarski.hr.
This historical satire is set during the tumultuous period of dynastic struggles in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its political relations with the Austrian Habsburgs, the Kingdom of France, the Cossacks, and the Ottoman Empire.
The show explores the neuroses of both the late 17th century and modern times within a Polish feudal community.
The local patriarch, Jan Pawel, driven by a thirst for power and fame, aims to defeat his arch-enemy Andrzej at the noble council. Meanwhile, his daughter Aniela fights against climate change, the innkeeper Żyda dreams of joining a “global Jewish conspiracy,” and Jan Pawel remains convinced that his Sarmatians are the greatest nation in the world.
When the not-so-heroic characters dream of a holiday on the top tourist destination of the 17th century—the intoxicating shores of the Ottoman Empire—they arrive at Vir Island, specifically Duboka Draga beach, which in the second season serves as a stand-in for the exotic Turkish coast.
As a result, Turkish tents, sunbeds, umbrellas, and other props became a regular part of the set design at Duboka Draga.
This high-quality comedy series features some of Poland’s biggest film and television stars, including Bartłomiej Topa, Martyna Byczkowska, Katarzyna Herman, Michał Sikorski, and more, with logistics handled by the Croatian production company Welcome Production.
Welcome Production has been producing promotional films, feature films, and TV series for 13 years, and 1670 marks the fourth Polish production filmed in Croatia. Apart from a photoshoot for a VIP advert, this is Welcome Production’s first project organised on the island.
