The City of Zagreb’s decision to offer free rides on the Sljeme Cable Car for all residents has proven to be a great success, with usage skyrocketing and positive environmental impacts.
Thanks to the City Council’s decision to make the cable car free for all residents of Zagreb, more and more people are using the Sljeme Cable Car.
This is evident from the number of tickets issued between the implementation of the decision on 4th May and 31st August this year, which has increased by nearly two and a half times compared to the same period in 2023.
Additionally, data shows that two-thirds of users are Zagreb
residents.
“The number of tickets issued in the same period rose from 63,156 to 155,455, with nearly 108,000 tickets used by Zagreb citizens. This clearly demonstrates that the City Council’s decision to offer free cable car rides for Zagreb residents was the right one, and I’m very pleased they are taking advantage of this benefit,” said Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.
As a result of the success of this measure, the use of private cars to reach Sljeme has also decreased.
“We expect that interest in the cable car will continue to grow, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the environment. Medvednica is one of the city’s landmarks, and the cable car is a far better means of accessing and enjoying nature than by car,” the Mayor added.
Mayor Tomašević introduced free rides on the Sljeme cable car from May this year for all Zagreb residents, motivated by the fact that they are already funding the cable car through loan repayments made from the city’s budget, as well as by the desire to protect the valuable resources of Medvednica Nature Park.
