Among rescue teams who helped flood victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina was a brave rescue dog from the Croatian island of Korčula.
Alongside the courageous Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) team, Zara, an exceptional search and rescue dog from Korčula, played a vital role in these efforts.
Last night, 11 rescuers from HGSS stations in Orebić, Dubrovnik, and Šibenik, along with Zara, returned home with invaluable experiences, once again reaffirming the core value of HGSS—to be there for those in need, regardless of borders.
Additional HGSS teams remained on standby throughout the operation, ready to assist if needed.
As reported by the Papagalo Dog Shelter from Korčula, Zara proved invaluable in the rescue efforts, aiding in searches for the missing and supporting local healthcare facilities.
“We are proud of you, beauty,” wrote the Papagalo shelter, expressing pride in Zara’s dedication and bravery, Morski.hr writes.
The first HGSS team arrived in Mostar on Friday evening, immediately deploying to Donja Jablanica to begin the search and rescue operation.
With experience in similar crises, the teams were well-prepared for the challenges posed by the flood-stricken areas—raging waters had destroyed roads, railway lines, and other vital infrastructure.
This operation in Bosnia highlights Croatia’s commitment to aiding its neighbours during times of severe natural disasters.
Missions like these not only provide immediate relief but also allow for the exchange of knowledge and experience, strengthening the long-term capabilities of the HGSS and other emergency services to tackle natural catastrophes.
Meanwhile, the government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton reported that the number of flood victims was lower than initially stated on Friday, confirming that 13 people, not 14 as previously announced, lost their lives in the canton.
