Zagreb’s Mayor Tomašević has officially launched the expansion and reconstruction of Sarajevska Road, a long-awaited project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity.

Mayor Tomašević today inaugurated the expansion and reconstruction of Sarajevska Road.

He welcomed the commencement of construction after decades of promises and emphasised that this road corridor is also significant as an access route to the Zagreb-Sisak motorway.

“We are proud to see the construction of one of our announced strategic road projects begin, which will reduce traffic congestion and also integrate around 35,000 residents from the neighbourhoods of Travno, Utrine, Dugave, Hrelić, and Jakuševec into the tram network,” said Mayor Tomašević, announcing a new southern road entry into Zagreb and the first expansion of the tram network in the city in over 20 years.

Sarajevska Road will be widened to include three lanes for vehicles in each direction, as well as pedestrian and cycling paths on both sides, along with noise protection measures to ensure safety and flow for various types of road users.

The works will cover the construction of 1.8 kilometres of road and 2.25 kilometres of tram track.

The tram track project, which will commence at the end of the year, will include eight new tram stops and a tram terminal.

The value of the works is €25 million, and significant co-funding is expected from EU funds in collaboration with the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.
