The town of Orebić celebrates 120 years of tourism

Orebić, 25 November 2024 – The town of Orebić, located on the Pelješac peninsula on Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast, was alive with celebration last night as the community gathered to honour three significant anniversaries in its history.

At the elegant Hotel Crystal, the town marked 120 years of tourism, 60 years of international recognition for the renowned Dingač wine, and 60 years of the beloved Poloneza Folklore Ensemble.

The evening was a feast for the senses, with exquisite Dingač wines from 17 producers paired with delicious bites, setting the tone for an unforgettable celebration.

Orebić, a charming tourist and wine destination, is steeped in a rich maritime history, upheld by hardworking locals who preserve its traditions while embracing a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle loved by visitors from around the world.

“A Destination That Captivates the World”

Josip Pavić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, praised Orebić’s commitment to culture, tradition, and natural beauty.

“Orebić shows how thoughtful planning, combined with respect for heritage and nature, can create a destination that delights visitors from all over the world, as reflected in its outstanding tourism achievements. I encourage you to continue promoting Orebić’s charm, enriched by Poloneza’s vibrant traditions and the exceptional wines, with Dingač holding a special place in your story,” Pavić said as he congratulated the town on its three major anniversaries.

Adding to the accolades, Frano Matušić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, highlighted the importance of cultural preservation. “Safeguarding heritage is key to understanding our history and developing tourism that honours a community’s authentic values. These anniversaries in Orebić are a perfect example of how it should be done,” he remarked.

An Authentic, Sustainable Future

Dubrovnik-Neretva County Prefect Nikola Dobroslavić underscored Orebić’s importance as a leading destination in the region. “Orebić is second only to Dubrovnik in terms of tourist numbers, and tonight’s celebration proves how much it has to offer—rich cultural experiences, outstanding wines, and a strong tourism product.

Together with our government, we’re working on vital projects for the area, such as the Orebić bypass, the Perna port, and the fast road to Brijesta, all of which will greatly enhance the quality of life here,” Dobroslavić stated.

Tomislav Ančić, Mayor of Orebić, delivered an emotional address, reflecting on the anniversaries as both a celebration and an opportunity to look forward.

“Tourism is evolving, and our challenge is to ensure Orebić remains authentic, sustainable, and distinctive. This is a moment where we can collectively shape at least another 120 years of success, grounded in our unique local story. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this journey. You are the foundation of Orebić’s continued growth as both a desirable tourist destination and a wonderful place to live,” said Ančić.

Acknowledging Local Excellence

Mladen Đeldum, Director of the Orebić Tourist Board, extended his gratitude to the local community.

“This is a chance to thank our hoteliers, private accommodation providers, restaurateurs, winemakers, artisans, and countless enthusiasts who work tirelessly to make Orebić a destination guests remember and return to. A special thanks goes to our cultural and sports organisations for enriching our offerings, local farmers for preserving authenticity, and public services for ensuring the safety and quality of our guests’ stay,” Đeldum noted.

The event, organised by the Orebić Municipality, the Tourist Board, the Pelješac Wine Routes Association, Plavac Mali – Pelješac, and the Poloneza Folklore Ensemble, welcomed around 200 guests.

Awards were presented to individuals and institutions instrumental in advancing tourism, preserving traditions through dance and song, and developing Dingač wine.

Among the honourees were some of the oldest accommodation providers, winemakers, vineyard workers, visionary tourism professionals, and journalists.
