A scene from Netflix’s hit series The Empress was music to many viewers’ ears in Dalmatia.
The Empress is a German historical drama series based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Sixteen-year-old Elisabeth “Sisi” von Wittelsbach falls for Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, who is originally betrothed to her older sister, Duchess Helene, and the two eventually marry.
The series quickly gained popularity, becoming Netflix’s second-most-watched series worldwide for two weeks and the seventh most popular non-English series after it was released.
One scene in the series highlights the good looks of men from Croatia’s Dalmatian region.
“Look, a delegation from Dalmatia. They say Dalmatian men are the most handsome,” remarks a companion to the ageing Empress, pointing out the striking Dalmatian men in the hall.
A short while later, Sisi addresses them in their native tongue. “Many thanks,” she says in the next scene, accepting a gift they’ve brought from Dalmatia, reported Index.
Filming took place across various locations in Germany, including Bavaria and Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam. Following the success of the first season, Netflix renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on 22 November 2024.
The series reached the Top 10 in 88 countries during its second week of streaming.
