British daily newspaper The Times has unveiled its list of the 25 best Christmas markets in Europe, and two Croatian cities have earned a spot.
Whilst one will come as no surprise, another, which made it in the top five, will.
25. Zagreb: A Foodie’s Delight
Zagreb has long been known for its vibrant Christmas markets, and it secures the 25th spot on the list. The city hosts over 25 markets scattered across its lower and upper towns, with the trio of parks in the lower town serving as a great starting point.
Food and drink take centre stage here. From spicy sausages and sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) to fritule (fritters), visitors can savour an array of festive treats. Wash it all down with a glass of plum brandy or local wine. Additional highlights include a giant outdoor skating rink and numerous craft stalls.
5. Rovinj: Old-Town Charm
Ranked fifth on the list, Rovinj captivates visitors with its romantic old-town ambience. Situated on the Istrian peninsula, the city’s cobblestone streets and picturesque harbour create a magical setting for Christmas festivities. While December temperatures hover around a mild 11°C, the town still brims with festive spirit.
Rovinj’s advent markets offer local delicacies, artisanal crafts, and plenty of souvenir opportunities. Visitors can also enjoy live performances, concerts, and family-friendly activities, making it an ideal destination for all ages.
